VR for vocational training in the hospitality sector

VET VR ACADEMY seeks to address the particular challenges posed by COVID19 to hospitality education with digital innovations: a transnational online learning platform and interactive VR environments.

The Covid 19 pandemic has undoubtedly had a devastating impact on the hospitality industry across Europe. Vocational training in the sector, for which work experience in internships and training companies is essential, has also been severely affected. This is confirmed byresults of a stocktaking carried out in the framework of the Erasmus+ project VET VR ACADEMY in the five partner countries France, Spain, Cyprus, Denmark and Germany: Training institutions have been keen to adapt quickly to these changes. The digitalisation of classrooms has made it possible to continue training as much as possible. However, the unwillingness of some VET providers to invest in technological equipment and tools, the difficult financial situation during the pandemic and the lack of digital skills among teachers and trainers led to many delays and problems in implementing existing programmes and designing new ones. These impairments also affected the content, examinations and training successes as well as the attractiveness of the occupational profiles and training as a whole. In addition, practical work experience in particular, which is essential in this field, was lacking during training.

Digital tools as an answer to the specific challenges

Building on these survey results , the partnership is now preparing to develop an online learning platform and virtual reality environments for targeted training in the hospitality sector.  The online platform will include at least three modules: interpersonal skills, technical skills and specific skills related to the professional environment.

The VR environments, will enable VET learners in the hospitality sector to gain insight into and train professional practices in the hospitality sector in the partner countries, will cover five thematic areas and be available in French, Spanish, English, German and Greek:

– Setting a table

– Cocktail preparation

– Serve und clear meals

– Flambé at the table

– Hygiene and cleaning

These tools can be used not only to enhance and complement on-site vocational training, but also to support language learning and prepare for mobility abroad.

Training course on QAS in Sofia, the experience of the Vocational School “Penna” based in Italy

Emanuela, a mathematics teacher at the Istituto di Istruzione Secondaria Superiore “G. Penna” of Asti, an agricultural technical institute and professional institute for food and wine, tells of her experience in Bulgaria

“The school, a partner of the ENNE Project, was present from 30 May to 3 June 2022 for the Erasmus quality standards workshop held in Sofia.

The week was rich of content that immediately aroused my interest and curiosity and motivated me to undertake a mobility course at the school where I teach. During my school career, I spent a year in London to learn the English language much better, but also enriched my knowledges.

 I was totally in agreement with the principles of inclusion, digital education, active participation in the Erasmus network and sustainability and environmental responsibility of the Erasmus system and I tried to learn as much as possible from the experienced teachers I met during the week.

I believe that confrontation with people who have experience in the field is the most formative thing there is for a novice teacher and I thank everyone for their patience with me, answering my questions that may have seemed obvious to them.

I was very happy and when I came back to Italy, I immediately felt the need to tell the Headmaster about my experience and we scheduled a meeting for 27 June to share the experience with all interested colleagues.

During the meeting, I illustrated the slides on the Erasmus Quality Standards for a correct management of VET mobility activities with a focus on the practical activities we should have undertaken to start a mobility scheme for our students and teachers.

The aim of the meeting was mainly to convey some of my enthusiasm to my colleagues and the many questions I received were testimony to my small success.

The first step was to set up a working group for the school’s accreditation and to gather signatures, I had to schedule a second meeting about ten days later.

During this second meeting, which was attended by the most interested teachers, who are now part of the working group, we addressed more specific topics concerning our accreditation project in vocational education and training.

The working team became “official” during the Teachers’ Board meeting and it composed of the institute’s project manager (was the person who allowed me to get in touch with the entire Enne project group) the school headmaster, the director of administrative services, PCTO (school-job experience) contact persons and two English language teachers were included in. It is a very close-knit team because we have all worked together on projects before.

Because of our lack of experience in mobility and the tight deadline for our school’s application for accreditation (the deadline is mid-October), we chose to get in contact with the accredited training agency EGInA, active in the field of European projects and partner in the ENNE project.

The motivation is there, the enthusiasm is not lacking, we just have to get going”.

Escola Profissional de Espinho, 3D-Print Project and Learning by Competing Project

On the 22nd of June, the Portuguese Multiplier Event of the European Project 3D-Print (https://www.3dprint-training.com/) took place, organized by CEPROF. This project is co-financed by the European Commission under the scope of the Erasmus+ programme.
The objective of the Multiplier Event was to disseminate the objectives of the project, as well as the already obtained final results, to the relevant stakeholders and interested people.

The main objective of the project consists of providing support for the educational and training challenges related to equipping the future workplace with relevant and needed skills to participate in the 3D printing revolution. This was achieved by providing entry-level, easily accessible courses, that could motivate adults with fewer qualifications.

Escola Profissional de Espinho

The presented results in the Multiplier Event were:

  • A guide on how to introduce 3D printing in adult education;
  • A training programme on 3D printing, for trainers to provide them with the needed knowledge tools to develop a teaching program on 3D printing in adult education;
  • A teaching pack that enables adult educators to learn more about 3D printing.

Escola Profissional de Espinho

The Multiplier Event counted 28 participants and was a major success.

Website school page on the ENNE project

In the end of June, OvarForma hosted the Learning by Competing (www.lbc.conform.it) Multiplier Event, together with CEPROF and APSU, the Portuguese partners of the same Erasmus+ project.

The 5 big pillars/objectives of the project were the creation and testing of innovative teaching methodologies, introducing competition in teaching and learning, developing ICT and mobility competencies, promoting perseverance and resilience, and developing soft skills and utilizing the motivational effects of robotics to excite students about science and technology.

Escola Profissional de Espinho

From these 5 pillars the project obtained the following results:

  • Four training modules on Robotics and resources;
  • A training platform;
  • Improvement in the performance of the students;
  • Improvement in the interest in foreign languages;
  • Higher motivation for mobility and interest of the other schools in the methodological approach of “Learning by Competing”.

The Multiplier Event was an important step towards the sustainability of our project!

ENNE Blended Course, what results has produced?

VETCREA is a KA2 project that started in 2022 and was submitted after the blended course of the ENNE project.

VETCREA did not let its start in Italy go unnoticed. The students from the various partner schools worked together to achieve a wonderful result that was presented to the general public on 12 May.

Together with the partner schools from Italy and Portugal, this was an unforgettable experience for the pupils and colleagues from the department’s Fashion, Multimedia, Care Hair and Design. The students and teachers worked closely together to show their expertise in Spoleto: fashion, hair care, multimedia and graphic design came up with a beautiful concept in the theme New & Eco friendley with as the final result a fantastic fashion show and as apotheosis the dress designed by the Italian fashion school. The Belgian school, with its multimedia and graphic design department, took care of the invitations and suchlike as well as the hairdo. The accessories were provided by the Portuguese partner school and they will be the host country next year. In the third year, we meet our project partners in Hasselt for a final show.
